POEM: We Came From the Small Islands - Windrush Poem
We Came from the Small Islands - a Poem about Windrush by Antoinette Brooks.
This poem was inspired by the stories my mother told me about travelling to England from the Caribbean, and the challenge of navigating a new environment which they felt part of (as they were from the British Empire and had been brought up to consider themselves British), but different at the same time.
Like many immigrant communities before and since, they had to forge a new sense of identity and create a new world for themselves. This poem is my homage to that experience.
