Discover How Children's Laureate Joseph Coehlo's Love for words Blossomed into a Poetry Career

One day, when 12-year-old Joseph Coelho was watching television, he witnessed something that haunted him.

A performing bear, captured as a young cub, that spent most of its life in a cage and was cruelly forced to dance to entertain people.

Joseph had not given much thought to being an author before then, “I don’t think it ever occurred to me that I could be a writer,” he recalls, “writers were special people who existed elsewhere in far off places,” but as he watched the programme he empathised with the bear’s plight and words that captured the suffering he had seen poured out of him.

Joseph called the poem Unbearable and entered it for his local poetry competition. If this were a fairy-tale, Joseph would have walked off with the prize whilst highlighting the severe plight of bears forced to live in such conditions, but although he did not win and the poem has since been lost, Joseph recalls it awakened a desire to explore different poetic forms.

Joseph Coehlo on the importance of Sharing Poetry

After that Joseph regularly wrote poems that expressed his feelings, his worries and his life, and he shared them with his friends at school, though, he recalls, they were not always receptive. On one memorable occasion a classmate proceeded to loudly correct every grammatical error he had made but Joseph did not let this distract him. “Poem is written to be shared,” he insists.

Infact, he recently discovered that his grandmother, now in her nineties, has been writing poems for decades in greeting cards she sends to with her friends.

He was particularly inspired by the visit of the Jamaican poet, Jean Binta Breeze, to his school where she performed a poem about "the softest touch". If writing his poem about bears taught Joseph that poetry could describe and transcend suffering in a way that prose often cannot, then watching Binta Breeze perform to his classmates, demonstrated that poetry also had the power to capture the attention of a crowd. He watched her and realised, this can actually be a job.

After completing university, where he studied archeology, he spent years honing his abilities as a poet. If there was an apprenticeship to becoming Children’s Laureate, then Joseph has certainly completed it.

Alongside working as a gym instructor and salesman, Joseph was also a performance poet, a playwright and visited schools and libraries across the country sharing and encouraging pupils to write poems of their own. It was meetingthe publisher Janetta Otter-Barry at the London Book Fair that led to the publication of his first poetry collection and set him on the winding journey to becoming Children's Laureate.

Joseph Coehlo's Advice for Writers

In a recent Zoom interview, hosted by JerichoPrize and ScholasticUK, I asked his opinion for emerging authors on how to handle the sometimes tricky issue of author's fees for school or library visits.

Joseph's advice was sound. He acknowledged that author's should always be reimbursed, but for newly emerging poets and writers reimbursement could initially come in the form of the library or school supporting the author in other ways - for instance photographs of the visit or by tweeting about it on social media. "Interacting with readers is my favourite bit of being an author," he explains. "It's something you need to have a passion for."

His stories show how life-affirming both libraries and books can be. In his popular picture book series, Luna Loves, we see that for Luna visiting the local library is simultaneously a place of exploration and solace, as she and her father, who has separated from her mother, bond over their joint love of books.

As Laureate he sees his role as encouraging children not only to read, but also write, and he offers some sage advice.

“Don't ever be envious of those who win prizes. That is temporary. What lasts are your books & the impact it has on the child reading it. That is what remains.”

Shoichi Yokoi: The True Story of the Japanese Soldier who hid in the Jungle for 30 Years

Have you ever made a promise that you intended to keep? What would you do if you were placed in a situation where it was almost impossible to keep your word? This is the true story of Shoichi Yokoi, a Japanese soldier who vowed to stick to his promise, no matter how long it took.

Shoichi Yokoi had hidden in the jungles of Guam for almost thirty years. During this time he spent his days hidden in a small cave which he lined with bamboo, When night fell, he crept out to gather coconuts, papaya, frogs, toads, eels and rats for food, always making sure that nobody saw him.

It was a hard one. He had forgotten what it was like to sit and laugh with friends over a cup of tea. He could not remember the last time he had spoken to his family. But Shoichi had made a solemn vow thirty years earlier, and determinedly, he stuck to it.

He could still remember the moment when he was a young man and he had decided to flee to the jungle. He had been in the army, a Japanese sergent fighting in World War Two, when he had heard that the American army were coming and his superiors had decided to surrender.

"I will never surrender," he'd thought at the time. "I will never give in." And he and some fellow soldiers had escaped to the jungle rather than bear the shame of becoming prisoners of war.

Months passed. Some of his friends eventually returned, some of them died, and soon Shochi was entirely alone. He taught himself to make fire. He discovered that if he stripped bark from a tree he could turn it into cloth and make clothes. He taught himself how to catch fish, rats and eels for food.

Thirty years passed slowly. He was no longer a young man, but still he was determined that he would never surrender to the enemy.

One day Shochi decided to check some fish traps he had set. "If I go and check them early then nobody will see me," he said.

But two local men were there and they wondered who this strange elderly man was, and quickly they approached him. "Who are you?" they snapped.

What should he do? "I am a soldier," thought Shochi, "I will attack!" He ran at the two men with all the might he had, but thirty years of hiding in the Guam jungles had made him weak, and he was no match for them. They soon overpowered him and took him to their home.

Shoichi was scared. What were they going to do to him? One thing he was sure of, he would never give in to them. The first question they asked surprised him.

"Are you hungry?" they said kindly. They gave him a bowl of soup and when they saw how quickly he ate it, they gave him more and more.

"Who are you?" they asked. "Why are you in the jungle?"

"I am Sergeant Shoichi Yokoi of the Imperial Japanese Army... and I will never surrender," he explained.

The men were silent for a moment, then one of them spoke softly to Shoichi.

'But the war ended thirty years ago," the men explained. "There is no need to hide anymore."

Shochi Yokoi bowed his head. "It is with much embarrassment that I will return home," he announced, "but I did my best to serve the Emperor."

When Shochi returned to Tokyo, he was welcomed as a hero. 5,000 schoolchildren turned out to cheer and greet him.

Some people thought he was inspirational, whilst others were confused and could not understand why he thought it was best to stay in the jungles of Guam for 27 years.

Shochi went on to marry and even appeared regularly on television too. He told people that living in the jungle for thirty years had taught him how to be content with a simple life and take pleasure from small things.

Sometimes, people would stop by his home and sit with him and have tea. How did you survive they asked him? "I kept myself occupied everyday," he explained. "i gained alot of delight inl earning how to survive." And he would tell his visitors how strange the modern world was and how he missed the old times he knew so well.

Other times, if people visited, Shoichi would not be there and they would ask his neighbours were he was. His neighbours would tell them that Shoichi was missing his old life, and he and his wife had taken a break for a few days by visiting the jungles of Guam which he knew so well.

Why Six-Year-Old Oscar is Climbing Britain's 12 Highest Mountains

When Oscar's sister was ill he saw what a difference a lovely break could make, so he came up with a plan to raise money to help other children who were poorly too. Six-year-old Oscar decided to climb a mountain - and that's how he became an Inspirational Kid.

Six year old Oscar wanted to climb Mount Everest. He was hoping to raise money to help sick children have a nice holiday. He had learned about Edmund Hilary at school who was the first westerner to reach the summit of Everest. Oscar decided that he wanted to be the youngest to achieve the same feat.

But Mount Everest is in Nepal, over 4,500 miles from where Oscar and his family live. His parents pointed out that that would be a long way to travel, especially when he had school to go to, so Oscar and his dad sat down and worked out a different plan.

Now Oscar is travelling around Britain and climbing the 12 highest mountains in the United Kingdom instead.

So far Oscar has climbed five mountains including one called The Old Man of Coniston. His family join him too, including his little sister who is only three years old.

One of the mountains was so windy that Oscar's father and grandfather had to keep hold of him. On another walk alot of hailstones fell on Oscar and his friend Ollie who had joined him.

So far Oscar has raised over £1500 and wants to raise £8,849 as Mount Everest is 8,849 metres high.

"The walks don't scare me," says Oscar, "but sometimes my fingers get abit cold. I want to raise alot of money to help the children who aren't well."

Helen Keller was a writer, disability rights activist and lecturer. Despite losing her sight and ability to speak at 18 months old, she went on to write 14 books and become a powerful political advocate.

Helen Keller was a brave and determined woman who became famous for overcoming her disabilities. She was born in Alabama in 1880 and lost her sight and hearing when she was a baby. With the help of an enslaved African-American girl, and then later on her teacher, Anne Sullivan, Helen learned to communicate through touch. She even went on to attend college and become a writer and activist. She inspired people all over the world to never give up and to work hard to achieve their dreams, no matter what obstacles they face.

Maya Angelou

Rain Before Rainbows by Smriti Hall, is an uplifting rhyming story of hope, friendship and resilience.

I fell in love with the combination of David Litchfield's beautiful artwork and Smriti Hall's uplifting prose. The book starts with a young girl forced to leave her home, a castle that is burning, in search for somewhere new to live. The pair travel together through the darkness, across mountains, against their worries and fears in search of somewhere safer and brighter.

There are so many ways this beautiful book can be enjoyed. Firstly, to help children understand the beauty of hope and expectation, even if they are facing challenges. Secondly, with the little girl (who remains unnamed) being forced to flee her home, it strikes me that this can be a useful book to help children understand the situation of refugees too. It's a wonderful rhyming picture book, reminding us that after upheaval and trouble there is always hope for a new beginning.

"I will always remember the year 1887 for it is.. the year I went out into service... just past my tenth birthday... Of ocurse I cried when I left home but I was the eldest and there wasn't any room for me anymore..."

When I first read this book, there were no reviews for it, and I thought that I had better rectify that.

The author of this book is Dorothy Edwards, who is better known as the writer and illustrator of the "My Naughty Little Sister" series. In this book, she gathers several true stories that her aunt told her about her adventures working as a maid in London in the late 1880s. Her aunt was only ten when she was sent to live out for the first time - but she was one not to be messed with. Although she was young, small for her age, and at the bottom of the social pile wherever she worked Nan, as she was called, was a girl with great spirit - she always made sure she stood up for herself.

So whether it is teaching a lesson to some mean older boys, getting sweet revenge on a cheeky postman, or taking a rich young lady down a peg or two - Nan, with her strong sense of justice and right or wrong, is always a girl to be admired.

It is written in the first person, as if Nan herself had sat next to you and decided to tell you all about her childhood. This makes it the ideal book to read aloud to your children, especially as most of the chapters are not too long. So go on - grab a copy! I'm sure you and your children won't be disappointed!

A heart-warming picture book, The King of Kindergarten (or King of the Classroom in the UK version), celebrates the excitement that one boy feels on his very first day of kindergarten.

From the moment he bursts out from beneath his wonderfully coloured quilt, and runs down for breakfast with his mother and father (pancakses anyone?), our narrator is confidently assured by his mother that he is the King of Kindergarten. She tells him this, not so he will feel that he is better than anyone, but to empower him to think and act postively on his first day in this strange new environment.

This is not so much a book about a child overcoming doubt or fears as they face school, but of a young child who is eager to learn, help others, interact and play.

Highly recommended.

Through Kenny's eyes, we eventually see the impact that the horrific events that happened in Birmingham 1963 has on one family and community, and although the ending feels rushed, I think readers will love the family relationships that have been created here.

The Mighty Miss Malone

In Mighty Miss Malone readers are transported to the heart of the Great Depression as 12-year-old Deza Malone starts a gripping journey to find her father who has been forced to leave the family in search of work.

Deza is sharp, resourceful and literary. This story of how her family bonds enable her to overcome racism and poverty, in this wonderful journey of courage, hope and the pursuit of dreams against all the odds.
